Basic Overview of Planets
Every planet has some strength (Shadbala) in every horoscope depending on the house it is in, certain direction, time, speed, luminosity and aspects by other planets. Based on Shadbala and other factors, each planet can be benefic or malefic and give certain phal (results). Below is basic overview what each planet represents. This is obviously by no means an entire list just want to provide you a high level overview. Only planets does not decide an event or an outcome. Its a very complex relationship of planets, signs and houses in context of Dasha Bhukti and Antara decides the event and outcome. I am providing more details around Mars, Saturn, and Rahu since there is lot of confusion around these planets.
Shukra (Venus): Decision making ability, fulfillment from doing the right thing, fairness, DNA, genetics, success in marriage, spouse, blood cancer, loss of testosterone, performing arts, writer, poets.

Budh (Mercury): friendliness, ability to relate, witty, intellectual, writing, education, calculation, analysis.

Shani (Saturn): Saturn is generally considered as malefic. However, depending on its position and other factors, it can be benefic in certain horoscopes. When in first house as malefic, it can bring depression and especially person has to flight for survival in early stage of life. Benefic Saturn in second house is generally very good as it brings wealth (especially if Venus is also present in second house). Third house is generally good for Saturn. Person with benefic Saturn in third house is intelligent, deep thinker but instigates flights with siblings, if malefic. In fourth house, person doesn’t get along with mother and also can have very hard childhood. If benefic Saturn in fifth house, person is generally very intelligent, very political, can be very spiritual but can get offspring very late in life, if malefic. In sixth house, person get lot of troubles from enemies, if malefic. In seventh house, malefic Saturn can delay the marriage. In eighth house, Saturn may give long life, if benefic but if Saturn is malefic then person is always worried, loner, and shy. If in ninth house, person can be very orthodox. If in tenth house, person can make good career, if Saturn is benefic. Successful lawyers generally has Saturn well placed in eleventh house. Twelfth house is generally not very good because it can create lot of obstacles especially in early age. The positive function of Saturn is to create stability, give sustaining power, consistency and reliability. The negative function of Saturn is to cause delays and setbacks, debt, delays, imprisonment.

Guru (Jupiter): The positive function of Jupiter is to expand the principles of whatever planet it contacts. The negative function of Jupiter is to create excessiveness and over-optimism. This planet is the most helpful, generous, most benefic planet.

Surya (Sun): Consistency, status, authority, ability to manage things intelligently, authority figures, the bones, our body, vitality, soul, will power, aspiration, power, popularity.
Chandra (Moon): One's sense of self, adaptability, ability to nurture, popularity. Delicate, soft, sentiment, mind.
Harshal (Uranus): The positive function of Uranus is to open us up to new possibilities The negative function of Uranus is to cause restlessness and tension, or sudden and unforeseen changes in our circumstances.
Neptune: The positive function of Neptune is to make us aware of the more subtle influences of our life – inspiration, poetry, idealism, psychic sensitivity and spiritual values. The negative function of Neptune is to create confusion, muddle, escapism, laziness, irresponsibility, misunderstanding, deception and delusion.

Ketu: Liberation, innate talents and skills, bacteria, that which we are being liberated from, endings, criticalness, obsessions, intense focus
Rahu: Karmic planets, more malefic form of saturn and creates confusion, disturbance, anger. When positive, these planets bring popularity, prestige, fame. Rahu in first house makes person shrewd, cautious, self-sufficient. Rahu, if benefic in second house makes person wealthy. Malefic Rahu in third house is not good for siblings. Benefic Rahu creates property for person when in fourth house but creates separation in family, if malefic. Benefic rahu in fifth house makes person spiritual in nature. Malefic Rahu in sixth house creates lot of addictions such as drinking, smoking. Rahu in seventh house may settle person in foreign land. If Rahu is benefic in eighth house, person becomes researcher or detective but very bad for a person, if rahu is malefic. Benefic Rahu in ninth house is good for education especially in foreign land. However, if malefic in ninth house, creates quarrels with boss, father, guru. Benefic Rahu in tenth house is good for foreign assignments. If rahu is in eleventh house and malefic, then bad for relationship with siblings, friends. Twelfth house is generally good for Rahu if benefic but if malefic then loose wealth especially while living in foreign land.

Mars (Mangal): Mars is generally considered as malefic. However, based on Mar’s Shadbala and other factors, Mars can act benefic in certain horoscopes. Mars signifies power. Mars in first house generally makes person strong minded, confident, leader, if positive but arrogant, if negative. Mars in second house is good for accumulating wealth if benefic but overly generous, leads extravagant life if malefic. Third house is good for Mars when benefic. Such people are self-made, intelligent, creative however, often creates differences with siblings if Mars is malefic. When Mars is in fourth house, person buys property, makes money from property if Mars is benefic. Mars in fourth house creates constant quarrels among family members, if malefic. Mars in fifth house is generally not good for offspring, if malefic. Mars makes person athletic, gives good survival instinct if benefic. Several famous athletes has benefic Mars in the fifth house. Sixth house is generally not good for Mars. It gives several diseases, if malefic. However, benefic Mars can give a person good career in defence.
